Mat Pilates

Mat pilates is an exercise regime based on the original exercises Joseph Pilates developed in the early 20th century to strengthen his own body as a young man. Mat pilates can be modified for any age, body, or fitness level, and is a low-impact form of exercise with many variations available, which allow very it to be very specifically tailored to the individual.

Mat pilates is, as the name suggests, performed on a mat at floor level, though each exercise may be undertaken sitting, standing, lying on the mat or even seated in a chair.  Usually mat pilates is in the format of group classes although 1:1 or duet sessions are available as well.  Most people start pilates in a mat class, however with some injuries or conditions it might be appropriate to work in a studio first with the pilates equiment.  (If that is the case your instructor or healthcare professional will advise you.) Studio pilates and mat pilates compliment each other and if you take part in both pilates formats you will see how the one enhances understanding of the other
